This structure is used to express possession, ownership & relation.

Present Perfect: “Have Had”

Used for experiences or situations from past until now.

Subject + have/ has + had + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • I have had a car for five years.
  • I have not had a car for five years.
  • Have you had a car for five years?
  • Haven’t you had a car for five years?
  • She has had a problem since morning.
  • She has not had a problem since morning.
  • Has she had a problem since morning?
  • Hasn’t she had a problem since morning?

Subject + have/ has + had + adjective + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • I have had a big house for ten years.
  • I have not had a big house for ten years.
  • Have you had a big house for ten years?
  • Haven’t you had a big house for ten years?

Subject + have/ has + had + adverb + adjective + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • I have had a very beautiful car for many years.
  • I have not had a very beautiful car for many years.
  • Have you had a very beautiful car for many years?
  • Haven’t you had a very beautiful car for many years?

Past Perfect: “Had Had”

Used for something that happened before another past action.

Subject + had + had + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • I had had a car for five years before I sold it.
  • I had not had a car for five years before that.
  • Had you had a car for five years before you sold it?
  • She had had a problem since morning before the meeting started.
  • Hadn’t you had a car for five years before you sold it?

Future Perfect: “Will have Had”

Used for something that will be completed by a future time.

Subject + will + have + had + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • I will have had a car for five years by next month.
  • I will not have had a car for five years by next month.
  • Will I have had a car for five years by next month?
  • Will I have had a car for five years by next month?

Subject + will + have + had + adjective + noun + point of time/ period of time

  • She will have had a good job for five years by next year.
  • She will not have had a good job for five years by next year.
